J-FLAG is the
proud holder of a substantial portion of The Gaily News, the infamous
underground newsletter that gained notoriety among gay Jamaicans
in the 1980s. This invaluable collection is now primarily reserved
for persons doing research. As we move to have this collection scanned
and stored on compact discs, it will be made available to the wider
public through our library.
We also maintain
a scrapbook collection of newspaper clippings published in the
Jamaican press on sexual minorities to provide a record for our
work, but also for researchers, including members of the general
public. The collection begins in earnest during 1999 and is now
consistently maintained and up to date. Interested persons can
also use the search engines of Jamaican newspapers to examine
local coverage of issues important to sexual minorities, including
www.go-jamaica.com for
the nation's oldest and still most influential daily newspaper,
The Jamaica Gleaner.
J-FLAG also
holds a small collection of popular (fiction and non-fiction)
and educational materials in its lending library that serves primarily
the sexual minority communities in Jamaica. We always welcome
contributions to our lending library, particular video archives
celebrating the lives and lifestyles of sexual minorities around
the world, the rights achieved by sexual minorities in other countries
and the history of their struggles to achieve those rights, or
entertainment geared towards sexual minorities.
We welcome
the opportunity to work with scholars and allies from around the
world as we collaborate to make Jamaica a safe place for all regardless
of our sexual orientation.
