Events
At present,
J-FLAG has no events organised and none planned for the immediate
future.
For about
two years, until August 2001, J-FLAG had organised regular monthly
lymes for the lesbian, all-sexual and gay (LAG) community. These
were mostly successful events, which drew a regular crowd of up
to 350 people from a diverse cross-section of the LAG community.
Jamaica has no public spaces, in which LAG people are free to
be themselves, and very few private spaces. The lymes sought to
offer a safe space where we could meet and express ourselves as
LAG people, without fear or prejudice, and for their duration
we were indeed successful in providing such a well-needed social
space.
Unfortunately,
these events were not without troubles. Increasingly, they were
marred by violent incidents involving a small minority of people
from the very same community for whom we were trying to create
a safe space. We realised that we no longer had sufficient resources
to ensure the safety of all attending, and it was with heavy heart
that the decision was taken to discontinue the lymes.
Apart from
the loss of safe space, the lymes had also provided our only source
of sustainable income. We hope that in the future we will again
be able to provide such a space, but this will depend on the support
of all members of our community.
J-FLAG often
receives information about other events which happen in the LAG
community, including social events, workshops, groups, etc. You
can check us on our Helpline for further information about these
